UNRISD Research Fellow to join Exposure Dialogue Programme in Mexico City, 15-22 March 2009

13 Mar 2009

UNRISD Research Fellow, Imraan Valodia, will be participating in an Exposure and Dialogue Programme (EDP) in Mexico City, the capital of Mexico, between 15 and 22 March 2009. The main objective of the EDP is to continue and deepen the dialogue between labour economists from Cornell University, activists from the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) and researchers from Women in Informal Employment: Globalizing and Organizing (WIEGO) by drawing on the experiences of informal workers in another context, where the history of economic development, the economic reforms and, in particular informal employment patterns, differs substantially from that in India and South Africa.

Since the successful first EDP in Ahmedabad, India in 2004, the Exposure and Dialogue Programme has been promoting a constructive dialogue between mainstream economists and ground level activists and researchers around key assumptions of neo-classical economics and neo-liberal economic policies. The dialogue is organized around issues that arise when researchers are exposed to the lived reality of poor women's lives by getting them to spend a few days experiencing that life by living and working in the informal economy.

The Mexico City EDP is being organized by Unidad de Desarrollo Economico - CEPAL Mexico.
