Swedish Scholars Presented Research at UNRISD on Workplace Rights and Collective Bargaining.
Björn Beckman, Professor Emeritus at Stockholm University, and Gunilla Andrae, Associate Professor at Stockholm University, gave a special presentation on 18th November 2009 at UNRISD on “Organizing Wage-workers for Workplace Rights and Collective Bargaining.”
According to Beckman and Andrae, workers from the informal sector don’t engage in collective bargaining for issues related to wages since they are not salaried workers; therefore, Beckman and Andrae argued that workers from the informal sector follow a different work dynamic compared to workers who are a part of trade unions.
Beckman and Andrae’s presentation was a continuation of a research proposal submitted to the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) last year, entitled “Decent work: Organizing across the formal-informal divide in Kaduna.” Beckman and Andrae have had a long history working in labor issues and trade unions in West and South Africa. The two have published widely on African politics, including a project paper for UNRISD where they examined the experience of Nigerian textile workers under structural adjustment.
