UNRISD will be in Rio this month to engage in the global dialogue around “the future we want”. Recent UNRISD research findings will inform our contributions, which emphasize the importance of placing social dimensions at the centre of development for “the future we shape” to be an equitable, inclusive and sustainable one.

The economic, technological and institutional approaches that currently form the basis of green economy strategies run the risk of reinforcing human insecurity and inequalities. A growing
body of evidence points to the diverse—often unequal or detrimental—social consequences of green economy policies, and suggests key elements for alternative approaches that can promote the combined social, economic and environmental goals of sustainable development.

Join UNRISD at Rio+20:

We are organising and collaborating in a number of events across the city – side events at the official conference, the civil society-led People’s Summit and the ISEE conference – where Director Sarah Cook and Deputy Director Peter Utting will be joined by collaborating researchers Laura Rival (University of Oxford), Bina Agarwal (ISSE), Pilar Alvarez-Laso (UNESCO), Nicola Bullard (Associate, Focus on the Global South), Laura Rival (University of Oxford), Olive Shisana (ISSC) and, Michael Winer (Cape York Institute).
